ROBE480K & BMITH. THE DAILY DISPATCH. WILMINGTON. MAY 4. 1S67. Public Debt. Washington-, April 29. It is not proba L!f that t!io rpular monthlv statement of the public Jelit for April will" r delayed in its publication beyond the 1st or 2d of May. The indications are that it will present an exhibit ot a redaction in the debt to the extent of between five and "six millions of dollars. The receipts from customs and in ternal revenue resources during the month will, judging from the sums which have svlreadv been reported, amount to about ,000,000, one-half of which, being for cu-toms is in coin. The extreme lewness of the internal revenue receipts, as compared with other periods, is a fact which has leen the. subject of considerable interest lor sev eral week?. It has only been on one or two occasions lately that the receipts from that source appeared less or even as low as those derived from customs. The statement will probablv show an amount in the treasury in coin of" 100,000,000, with li,000,000, or more' of gold certificates on deposit. Stkl'CK by Lightning. In balem, Mass., during a thunder showery few evenings since, a young man was prostrated by the lightning while walking in the street. At the time he had a steel-framed umbrella in his hand, with a wooden handle, the frame of which was completely riddled and thrown to the opposite side of the street. The breast of his coat was torn, and the wrist bund of his flannel shirt hung only by a shred,, while the sleeve was partially torn open. What is more strange, on the" shoes which he wore were steel buckles, appar ently, untouched, while the top of one of his stockings was literally unraveled. The young man was not injured iq the least, only experiencing, on the following day, a little numbness in one of his hands. All he re members of the affair is, that he saw a large ball of tire. When he reached the store where he is employed, and whither he direc ted his steps as soon as he recovered suffi ciently, he jocosely asked them if they ever saw ail umbrella struck by lightning, when, to his surprise, his attention was called to his. tattered garments and he for the first time realized what an escape he had had. " Suicide. A melancholy case of suicide occurred in our town town last Sunday night. William J. Page, a young man, we suppose about twenty-one years of age, terminated his earthly existence by drinking laudanum. We understand that he had been quite in temperate in his habits of drinking f oi some time, and probably that had something to do with the unnatural act. . It seems that, on Sunday night, he pur chased laudanum afT two or three of our drug stores, and drank off probably an ounce and a half ot it. He made no secret of his inten tion, but spoke about it to several persons ; they however, did not believe hini-in earn est until he had swallowed the fatal potion. He was found about 10 o'clock P. M. lying upon the street insensible, was carried home and medical assistance promptly called in, but too late to save life. He expired between seven and i eight o'clock Monday morning, being wrholly unconscious from the time he was discovered lying on the street. He was the son of a widow lady well known and much respected in this commu nity, and who has the sympathy of our peo ple iu her distress. Danville Register. Immigration. Advices from Ireland an nounce that a heavy tide of immigration has begun from that country to the United States, and it bids fair to increase- in vol ume as the year advances. It i3 reported frcm Queenstown that it is. impossible to give any adequate idea of the extent of this movement or the anxiety of the Irish to tret to America. During the week ending the 15th of April nine steamers sailed from QueenstoAvn for the United States, bearing nearly 5,000 emigrants. Nine steamers were also to be dispatched by the various trans atlantic lines every week thereafter. From Germany the reports are that a great emi gration to the United States has also begun. We have room tor all the new comers, and extend them a, hearty welcome. Their labor, their projierty and their good wishes are of great advantage to the United States. NrTou Law in Tennessee. A mob, under the name ot Loyal League, in Blount county, led, among others, by the Sheriff of that county, drove. out by force a minister of the Methodist Church South, Rev. 3Ir. Haynes, "and the same day broke up and dispersed a conurejxation of the same church while as sembling for worship. The mob was com posed of whites and blacks. Rev. W. T. Dowell of the Church North, is reported to have instigated the mob. Several acts of violence have occurred in this place. Political excitement is very great and the feeling between the parties bitter. The arming of the militia causes great bitterness and dissatisfaction. The company organizing here will be ordered to Sweetwater. j A singular duel has recently taken place at Berlin between a journeyman silversmith and another artizan. The arms selected were a bottle of sulphuric acid. The ar rangement was that which ever of the two adversaries threw the lowest with dice should- swallow the contents ot the fatal vial. Chance favored the silversmith, who immediately poured out a glass of liquor and handed it to his adversary, who unhes itatingly drank off the liquid, but, to the astonishment! of his antagonist, instead ot failing senselessy smacked his lips and asked for another glass. The seconds Cad acted on the sensible idea of substituting arrack for the corrosive fluid. The affair termina ted in a leconciliation. Something for the 4 Ladies. A Paris correspondent writes as follows : " Now that crinoline is gone aud crinis ficti menanced. the great geniuses who in this part of the world invent female adorn ments have struck out something new. It is to deck garments with little pictures. In a shop window this morning I observed a par dessus of gorgeous red, bearing the picture of a Breton peasant iu blue ; on another was a picture of a silly young man; on a third, of a horse ; on a fourth, of a black gentleman with tail and horns ; on others, ships, land scapes, coats ol arms, and so on. The widow of Bishop Polk is teaching school in Tennessee. A,Brooklyn paper accuses the ladies of : that city of dram drnking at their dress-'j makers, and gives the following explanation of terms: "Moire antique," Old Rye ; " White Satin London Gin ; 4 Gingham," ! Burboa Whisker, " Alpaca Santa Cruz ; , "Delaine Jamaica Rum; "Tarleton." Scotch Whiskev ; "Poplin' IritU Whisker : " Silk S. O. " Spot ted Silk" is a Mint Julep. A " Poplin gored"' is synonymous with hot w hiskey, fcc. , The general conference of the European Powers, to settle the differences between France and Prussia, will meet in London on the 15th of May. It has been agreed thit in the meantime, pending the assemblage of the congress, the fortress of Luxembourg shall be dismantled. ' 1 The Tiiuee Great Western Cities. The Circinnati Commercial, in an article claiming for Cincinnati the largest popula tion of the great cities of the West, says that at the recent city elections, Cincinnati cast 23,000 votes, Chicago 10,000 and St. Loui 13,000. Gen. Hahu's effort to induce Qen. Grant to authorize Gen. Sheridan to set aside the recent election of the Mississippi Central railroad, and oust Gen. Beauregard, presi dent of the corporation, has not been suc cessful. Gen. Grant declines to interfere, and refers the applicants to the President. New Goods! New Goods! -AT- '." !
